A short report about 2018 Europeans Championships
2018 Europeans championships took place 4-9 September in Portoroz Slovenia a famous sailing spot and a well known touristic destination.
The weather was almost Mediterranean warm and sunny, except a short interval on Friday 7/9, but the wind was very light sea breeze from 6 to 9 knots. Due to this fact race comity had difficulty to carry out the racing program. So on Wednesday 5/9/ three courses were conducted with wind up to 8 knots and on Thursday 6//9 three more courses were conducted with lighter sea breeze. Unfortunately next two days the wind was instable and below the limit and so it was impossible to conduct more courses. So finally the Championship ended with 6 races on Saturday morning.
20 participants from 8 countries (Slovenia, Greece, France, Italy, Sweden, Croatia, Poland and Canada) raced to this Championship in two categories A and C.
The sailor who dominated in the races was the French champion Alain Cadre which won all races in overall and in C category with his Gema prototype followed by Swedish Jonas Davidson who raced with his new experimental prototype. Matjas Puch, the young local Champion, took the 3 rd place in C category. In A category the Italian Ezio Ferin won the 1 st place followed by the Greek Petros Katsareas and Croatian Zelico Sdrock in the 2 nd ans 3 rd places.
On Saturday after the end of the Championship the classic Piranja long distance regatta took place where raced 37 participants from 7 countries with any kind of windsurfing boards. Again in this race division 2 dominated in the results occupying almost all the 13 first places in overall ranking and again Alain Cadre was the winner. Finally the program closed with a sup race.
The spirit was friendly and due to the very big efforts of race comity and the excellent work and hospitality of the club’s staff everybody left happy from the event despite the difficult wind conditions.
Following are the final results in European Champioships and Piranja long distance race.

Stratos Efthyvoulidis (GRE 7) 2017 overall champion!
XX Mar Menor Surfari 2017
The last event of the season took place in the mar menor from 13th to 15th of Octobe during the Surfari, a mythic windsurfing contest. A fantastic place in the South of Spain where you can find sun ( 30º) , warm water ( 26º) and wind ( 8/15 knots). What’s more interesting for a DII sailor?
A perfect organization as they celebrated this year the 20th anniversary of the Surfari.
Friday morning all the sailors arrived and started to train.Nice to see new boards like the Kundaka, which is a new design adapted to the “C”type. As material we saw Kundaka, Lechner A390, Jaguar J9 and Reix Super Pro 84 with sails from 2Win2Sails, Loft and Techno 8.5.
The races started on Friday afternoon with 10/12 knots, really good conditions for DII with 3 victories and a second place, then Omar Moreno with 3 second places and a victory ( both from Club Windsurf Formentera) and Laurent Chapalain to complete the podium with 2 3rd places and 2 4th places.
It has been really great to see to the high potential of the Kundakas, with a different design in hteir rear part as we can see usually in a DII, really more modern and efficient in the light.
Saturday was the big day for the Surfari with the long race open to all material from DI to Formula, RS:X, Techno and some real old school board !
3 races where DII and Raceboard shared the same were launched with a similar result for the 2 first places, the 3rd one taken by Humberto Martinez from Cartagena.
1/ Alex Buchau, 2/ Omar Moreno, 3/ Huberto Martinez
Sunday was the end of the event with a first race announced for 11AM.…but finally delayed to 1PM. As a lot of people had a long road to do some left before the first start. The final results didn’t change.
A fantastic week end with fun, friendship and a lot of time to discuss the development of the class in Spain, where we need material for the youngs. Seeing some hot spot as Cartagena, Formentera and possibly other is encouraging for the growth of the class.
At the end everybody agreed this is a marvelous place to make a DII big event, and our objective for next year is seeing 20 DII competing in a friendly way !
See you all in 2018 !

Champions!
The 2017 Raceboard and DII European Championships have come to a close in Balatonfured, Hungary. Almost 100 windsurfers from all over the world competed in the event organised by the Hungarian Windsurfing Association.
It has been 20 years since the last major windsurfing event held on Balaton lake, but it was worth the wait. As Istvan Boka, the Mayor of Balatonfured, emphasised during the opening ceremony the city would love to welcome further windsurfing events and hopes that guests would be satisfied with their stay and that they would come back again in the future.
Balaton known for light wind conditions provided some excellent racing during the first part of the championships with 11 races completed within three days. Later it got a little tricky and the final 12th race was conducted just minutes before the last possible warning signal.
The six times Olympian and Hungarian windsurfing legend, Aron Gadorfalvi, claimed the championship in the Raceboard Men’s fleet with Latvian Ilona Grinberga taking the top spot in Raceboard Women.
After the event Aron was really happy stressing that it had been over twenty years since he last had the opportunity to race on his home ground. The support he got from the local community was great and to have the whole family with him was special. “My place is always easier for me as I train a lot here and know the lake well.”
Over in the DII class Irek Kutyla from Poland won the Division C and Janko Prisusek from Slovenia the Division A.

European Div II – Day 1- Race summary
European DIV II championships – 1st day of race summary by Piotr Oleksiak, pictures by Márk Ujvárosi
Today, four races were completed in Balatonfured, where the Raceboard and DII European Championships are taking place.
96 sailors from over 20 countries started off at 11 o’clock with the enthusiastic DIV II class going out first., followed by Raceboard Women and then Raceboard Men.
The two smaller fleets sailed on the outerloop in winds ranging from 5 to 12kts.
The men went on the inner with an exciting start of 71 windsurfers racing here in a fleet ranging from youth, through seniors to veterans including former and current Olympians.
After 3 races a one hour break was scheduled for the event, and then the fleet returned for the final race.
The conditions were typical for the area. The wind speed and direction changing throughout the day. This was not a problem however for the local Áron Gádorfalvi, who won 3 out of 4 races. Behind him the former champion – Patrik Pollak in second and Sánta Bence third.
Over in the ladies fleet Viviane Ventrin from France is leading, followed by Ilona Grinberga from Latvia and Molly Howell from Great Britain.
The DII is led by Irek Kutyła from Poland, followed by Juris Rozkalns from Latvia and Peter Murray from Great Britain.
We start tomorrow at 11:00 and you can follow the races live both on the event website and on the led screen at the venue.

Diaporos Regatta 2017
23-25 June took place in Vourvourou of Sithonia Halkidiki the 6th edition of the classic Diaporos regatta. 9 participants, 5 Greeks and 4 Slovenians raced to the event and the race committee completed 8 races for the fleet regatta despite the very light winds. For 2017 an innovation, Match Race a competition activity recently adopted by ID2CA, is added to the event and this was the first ever such race of the class. The result was very satisfactory and this fact will push to further implementation of this activity in the future. As mentioned above the wind was light, the whether sunny and warm, the typical summer whether of Halkidiki. Friday 23/6 took place and completed the Match Race, Saturday 24/6 four courses of the fleet regatta and Sunday 25/6 the rest four courses. The competition level was high with often interchanges in the placements during the courses and very small time laps between sailors in the marks and the finishing lines. The light wind conditions and the similarity of the equipment (ring A for everybody) favored the implementation of the tactical and strategy skills by the sailors. To the end we must say that the spirit in and out of the water was fantastic reminding the old classic spirit of division 2 races of passed decades.
Now a new appointment between sailors has been fixed for the next events to be held in Piran and Balaton September 2017.
